November 19, 2010-2 Hours

Today the fourth graders continued to work on their Wordle.net projects. In addition to instruction about Wordle, Liz is teaching them how to save and retrieve documents. This is something that they haven't done in the past. It is also frustrating for Liz because not all of the teachers follow the same curriculum at the same grade level. Therefore, all the different classes have various skills and experiences. The district is trying to get everyone on the same curriculum. As Library Media Specialists, we are trying to develop a list of skills that students should know at each level to assist the teachers. After their time in the computer lab, I assisted with book checkout.

The Library Media Specialists in the district along with the Director of Curriculum, Lori, worked on the Library Curriculum today. One of the problems that we are finding is that some teachers are refusing to use technology in their classroom. Or maybe it is not so much refusing than not trusting themselves to use it. With technology changing so fast, for some teachers once they understand a tool, it's seems too late to use it.

Liz and I were able to look over a document from another school district that already compiled for technology and library media. Our plan is to meet with each grade level while they are writing their curriculum to give them benchmarks in technology. We can then also help them brainstorm on the types of activities they could do with their students. This could also lead to collaboration. We think this plan will help our students and our teachers become better users of technology. No we just have to work on their attitudes toward technology.

The fourth graders started a Wordle.net project. Liz asked them to bring their writers notebooks with them, so they would have something to start from. Liz is also going to teach them how to save a document and how to retrieve it from their drive on the network. There were a few problems with computer log ins and Word freezing. Then I assisted with checkout.

Before this project, I shared with Liz that I created a Screencast on how to use Wordle.net for the teachers at the high school. She thinks she might use it with the teachers at the Elementary.

At the Elementary School, we ran into technology problems while she was trying to do a lesson again reviewing the Dewey Decimal System. Slowly but surely the students are starting to connect the dots. We can see this because they are becoming more and more independent during book checkout. Liz did have a backup plan, but the students were very impatient with it.

After that, we looked at the GroupSite for the LMC staff that Liz developed. This is a free alternative to a Ning. We are going to pilot it so that we will be able to recommend it to staff in the future.

I went to a meeting of the Library Media Specialists in our conference. There was no agenda, but it was a productive meeting. We all shared our experience and tried to help each other. Topics we discussed included Learn 360 vs. Discovery Streeming; Library curricullum at the HS level; how to get teachers and students to use Badgerlink/Online Databases more; Magazine Budgets; and Teacher Book Clubs. I did some great networking withe the LMS from Lake Mills for website collorbration. It was just great to get to know other professionals.

After school I attended the District Technology Council. I learned I would be attending the SLATE Conference in Fall. I am very much looking forward to this. As a group, we hope to learn more about One to One computing and implementing GoogleDocs into our district.

The next topic was a preview of the technology requests. The school board has set aside some money to purchase some technology equipment. It is probably going to be one of the most political processes I have been through with technology. I am the advocate for the high school, and I hope that I am successful in getting all of our requests fulfilled.

Liz presented a lesson on Dewey. She showed a Dewey rap that the students really enjoyed. During check out, I noticed that students were checking out different types of books that Liz highlighted because they didn't know that they were even in the library.

The majority of our time was spent talking with the Network Administrator, Mark. During this conversation, it be apparent why were are having some of the tech problems in the district. There is a definite difference in philosophy among the administration. I almost lost my mind when he said something like "Our kids are so far behind in technology that it doesn't matter what we do. They won't catch up." Liz and I feel like it is an uphill battle to get everyone on the same page.

That afternoon, I met with my Follett representative, Duane. He was so impressed with my ability to navigate Titlewave. Really, having the Follett representatives come into class and give their presentation was one of the best things that came out of Collection Development.

The 4th graders at the elementary school today were pre-assessed on their knowledge of call numbers/Dewey system. The librarian that worked with them last year had prior school library experience, only public library. Therefore, the students were not necessarily taught how to use the library. This causes checkout to take much longer than it should. It is Liz's goal to have them have 10 minutes of browsing and checkout time. Hopefully now that we know what students retained from the previous year, we can fill in the gaps and make the students better patrons of the library. After the lesson I assisted with book checkout.

Liz has assigned me the task of teaching a Dewey lesson. We also discussed our problems in the district with technology. We are hoping to build our infrastructure so that it can support more streaming and 21st century tools. It is our hope that technology dollars are not just spent on tools (SMART Boards, Document Cams, iPads), but also on making sure that they tools will work.

The Beginning

Libraries are an awesome place. I have used them in a variety of capacities, both school and public libraries. Part of the reason that I am seeking my Library Media Specialist License is because of the fun I have in researching and using the tools of the library. The other part is because of the success I obtained through help from the library staff. I want to help others in their search for knowledge.

I am anticipating working in the library media center at Clinton Elementary, Middle, and High Schools. Overall, I think that working in a library at any level will have its similarities. One concern that Melanie Stevens, the District Library Media Specialist, mentioned is how badly the collections need to be weeded. Another similarity between all the libraries is putting in orders and then cataloging all the new acquisitions. All students will need help choosing the right reading material, so I expect to help students find interesting selections at their level. Throughout the district, I hope to help the staff learn new technologies to engage their students in learning.

While there will be many similarities between the library, there are sure to be some differences. At the elementary, I anticipate choosing and reading stories to the students. Balance literacy is also a push at the elementary level, and I think many teachers would like resources pulled so that their students could have a variety of reading choices.

My first clinical experience will be at Clinton Middle School. Because the elementary school ran out of space, grades five through eight are housed at the middle school. Each grade level is about to start their research projects. Middle school students will need help with finding research materials. They will also need to be instructed on which websites are credible. I’m sure that I will need to troubleshoot technology with both teachers and students.

The high school level is where I have to most familiarity because of my teaching experience. I have observed the library aids decorating and setting up displays of materials. The LMC is opened to students during study halls, so I anticipate supervising and helping students. To help the staff, I expect to pull collections and put carts together that they can use in their classrooms. Several times a month, the LMC staff hosts some different events to promote the LMC; I expect to help plan these events. While I am a frequent user of the library, I am sure that there many things that take place in the library that I am ignorant about.

I am very excited to start working the libraries. Mrs. Stevens is also excited to have some extra help. There are sure to be surprises because in education, nothing is ever straight forward.
