September 27, 2010-2 Hours

At the High School, Liz and I tackled many problems. First, we discussed how World Book Online was used in the district and whether or not it should continue. It was not budgeted, which means that I need to take funds from somewhere else in the budget.

The other topic we discussed were the coming up with consistent library policies across the district. And also to come up with some district wide promotional ideas.

At the Elementary School, I assisted with classes doing book checkout. The lesson of the day was on how to use Destiny Quest, which is new to the students. The students took to it rather quickly. It is always a struggle to get all of the students signed in and to have all of the MacBooks working properly. Many of the students remembered how to find books using call numbers. I also think they appreciated the ability to see what was available and what wasn't. That way they could chose something else.

At the elementary school I observed Liz teach a third and a fourth grade class. Her topic for both were rules and expectations for the LMC. Then I assisted both classes with checkout. Liz and I touched based about working with the Diana from the Marshall Public Library.

At the High School, I spent an hour with the our School Specialty account manager. He came to look at our laminator and declared that our problems were from the old laminating film role. He is going to send us two new roles of laminate.

Today I tried to figure out what was happening with the newspapers and how to order them. Last week there was a panicked teacher who was looking for a copy of the local newspaper, but we hadn't received any in the LMC yet. I had to research and figure out the Purchase Ordering process. Then I ordered the paper online. I did end up having a second subscription to one of the papers, but worked with the purchaser in the district office and got it all worked out.

At the HS Liz and I took inventory of the processing supplies and decided that the HS has more than enough and shouldn't need to order for a very long time. We also decided that one of my purchases for this year should be to replace the magazine covers because they are very worn out and do not make the magazines look presentable after processing. Then we went through how to put in a technology work order. She reviewed my purchase order for my first book order. Then we cataloged books that were ordered last year. A significant amount of time was spent trying to figure out how to print spine and barcode labels.

Today I registered on WEMTA's ListServ to get emails from other LMSs around the state. I hope that they will assist me in my professional development and help with any problems that I might incur.

Five sections of English Classes came into the LMC today to check out books for their independent reading assignment. I taught them how to find and use the On-line catalog including how to narrow their search within Destiny Quest. Then I assessed them with selecting materials according to their interests.

To help teachers know when the library is available for sign out, I worked with our technology coordinator to create a shared calendar. The teachers already use this to sign out the computer labs, so it should be an easy transition for the teachers. Many were very receptive to this change. Before they would just tell the LMS when they were coming.

One of the in-service activities was an Instructional Technology Workshop. I instructed a section on how to use Animoto.com. The teachers signed up for an educator's account and then made their own 30 second Animoto. To prepare, I created a webpage with resources such as links to Animoto, the instructional PowerPoint, and student examples. The majority of the teachers were from the elementary school. During the lesson, I was able to help trouble shoot any technical problems and then help them brainstorm how Animoto could be used in their classrooms.

At CMS, I helped Melanie weed the 800s. She gets torn about what she should keep because it is still quality literature. I am a tosser. If it doesn't look good or inviting, I'm getting rid of it. We'll see if that hurts or helps me in the end. She has assigned me some things to catalog.

At CES I helped celebrate National Library Week. I had the students put their favorite book on a scoop of ice cream, brows, then fill out the forms that I made on Tuesday. Then they had time do a trivia contest. Some of this is what I helped Melanie plan.

Later in the day at the High School I gave the Animoto lesson.

I helped Melanie plan an activity for 3rd and 4th graders for National Library Week. I showed her the font with the sentence lines so that she could create sentence strips and then list: their favorite part of the library, why they like the library, or whatever else they would like to say about the library with a blank form. Then they will draw a picture of it on the top. Melanie then shared her professional development exercise with the paraprofessionals. She gave me her handout with the databases and the links. She also showed them how to access their email at home.

At CMS, I checked out students. I learned what reports are available in the OPAC; for such a bare bones system, there were quite a few items I entered/cataloged a mix media item. Cataloging took more time than I was anticipating, but I'm going to go back and make sure that the item is entered correctly. Students interrupted me (as they should), and that was a challenge to continue what I was doing.

At the elementary School, I worked with two 4th grade classes on a shelving activity. They were given a non-fiction book, then they had to go and "shelve" the book in the correct space. I had to help check them off that they were correct. It was a challenging activity for some, but they were able to figure it out. Then I helped with book checkout. It is very different in an elementary school. They are very needy there.

Today I talked with Melanie and she got me up to speed on where she is for the budget. She wants to switch to Destiny, but it would require $5,000 in computer upgrades that she's not sure the budget could handle after the initial $10,000 purchase price. Then I helped the 8th graders with their Digital stories on the Holocaust in iMovie.

My assignment is to research a paid citation maker and BrainPop. After talking with the teachers, it was decided that a paid citation maker would not be a wise use of library money because there are so many free resources that the students can use. We are continuing to investigate BrainPop.

Today at Clinton Middle School, I learned how to use their OPAC Library World to check in and out books, and doing general searches. Then I worked at the circulation desk during book checkout with the 6th grade class. To checkout a books, I had to type in their last names. It was a challenge to know how to spell their last names. However, it made the students be verbal. Then Melanie and I planned for next week on how to do digital stories and to explore Destiny.
