Febrary 9, 2010-1.5 Hours

Today I worked with 6th graders on their works cited pages for a research project on a famous person in computer lab in the LMC. They used an online citation maker, and I had to show them how to cite the image and not the results of their Google image search.

The Beginning

Libraries are an awesome place. I have used them in a variety of capacities, both school and public libraries. Part of the reason that I am seeking my Library Media Specialist License is because of the fun I have in researching and using the tools of the library. The other part is because of the success I obtained through help from the library staff. I want to help others in their search for knowledge.

I am anticipating working in the library media center at Clinton Elementary, Middle, and High Schools. Overall, I think that working in a library at any level will have its similarities. One concern that Melanie Stevens, the District Library Media Specialist, mentioned is how badly the collections need to be weeded. Another similarity between all the libraries is putting in orders and then cataloging all the new acquisitions. All students will need help choosing the right reading material, so I expect to help students find interesting selections at their level. Throughout the district, I hope to help the staff learn new technologies to engage their students in learning.

While there will be many similarities between the library, there are sure to be some differences. At the elementary, I anticipate choosing and reading stories to the students. Balance literacy is also a push at the elementary level, and I think many teachers would like resources pulled so that their students could have a variety of reading choices.

My first clinical experience will be at Clinton Middle School. Because the elementary school ran out of space, grades five through eight are housed at the middle school. Each grade level is about to start their research projects. Middle school students will need help with finding research materials. They will also need to be instructed on which websites are credible. I’m sure that I will need to troubleshoot technology with both teachers and students.

The high school level is where I have to most familiarity because of my teaching experience. I have observed the library aids decorating and setting up displays of materials. The LMC is opened to students during study halls, so I anticipate supervising and helping students. To help the staff, I expect to pull collections and put carts together that they can use in their classrooms. Several times a month, the LMC staff hosts some different events to promote the LMC; I expect to help plan these events. While I am a frequent user of the library, I am sure that there many things that take place in the library that I am ignorant about.

I am very excited to start working the libraries. Mrs. Stevens is also excited to have some extra help. There are sure to be surprises because in education, nothing is ever straight forward.
